It Is A Precarious Life, But He Showed Me Otherwise

In this precarious livelihood we have, one has to be certain on the next move as not to jeopardize the main objective one is eyeing on, be it in personal or professional life. It becomes especially perceptible when it deals with business as concerned.

Recently we have to revise back our exertions on the prototype of an educational portal. We had on mind the portal would be revolutionary in our education environment in Malaysia and the Ministry of Education was the right place to bump into. We did our homework. We traveled every nook and corner of the precincts. We met all the geeks and nerds. We endured vehement speeches by the smart ones. And not short of being cuffed by the upper hands. We even know which parking lot would provide better shades for our cars at certain hours of the day. Even which building holds cafeteria with a good food for our breaks. And I personally know which receptionists and secretaries are the sexiest.

But, it’s a jungle out there over in Putrajaya.

Initially we thought it would be worthwhile reconnoitering through with the Ministry of Education since we were dealing with the prototype meant for education. But then, there we had it, too thick a wall of a fortress for a credulous to break into. On my bad day, it almost made me think that merit comes last in this part of the hemisphere. Some people may jump right off but I am not that type. I prefer to look hard on our inadequacy and shortcoming rather than fingers do the pointing first. We may have all the ingredients but the way it’s been mixed, may not be to their taste.

It is precarious indeed.

And due to this precarious life, it exemplifies a good move when a faraway Malaysian friend,
Idham, has made an unprecedented decision to come back to Kuala Lumpur on last Thursday. He was here for purpose. Lest he wants to make it private, I choose not to write it down specifically on his “investment” thing here but I can see this gentleman has clear objectives in his action. He knows what’s down the road in 10, 20 years to come when he left the country last 2 nights leaving all the documents signed.

I was so pleased he called me when he was on his way to KLIA and at the same time made me feel bad for I had to be in Cyberjaya the whole day attending meetings with
MDeC officers and Academia-Industry Dialogue with the Minister of Higher Education at Cyberview Lodge Resort. In fact I had just reached home when Idham called to say goodbye.

Well I don’t feel that bad either. On the day he touched down, arrived, I made a point to see him slightly an hour after he took the train from the airport and spent my time with him in the afternoon (together with Shirley).

I always love to be in the company of people who eloquently demonstrate their spatial-temporal reasoning as much as their excellent overall dexterity. This gentleman fits the bill. And it gave good reason why Idham is at the place where he is at now. When I sat there for our lunch at the cafeteria on the upper deck of the skyscraper overlooking the breathtaking view of the city of Kuala Lumpur, I could actually feel Idham’s spirit was as high as the building itself and beyond.

The energy that vibrates in him made me feel that, life is not that precarious after all. We have to be larger than life.

And it’s all in our minds.

GAB: If you mix around with successful people, it can be a catalyst for you to be on the road to success.

Sometime last year, i attended a meeting between industries/MNC reps and academicians (ramai Cs & VCs...) to explore views & share learnings on how to bridge the gap between quality of local grads produced from IPTAs and expectation from industries on "what good looks like" to enter the mainstream workforce, chaired by the Higher Eductn Minister himself. He remain as calm and composed as ever. However, some of the academicians (note: some, not all), instead of exploring the "shared learnings", seemed to be in denial and were ever so ready to be up in arms to defend the education system.

Some of the "ideas" were documented and circulated to meeting attendees as possible next steps to be addressed, including a few quick wins that can be immediately introduced.

You know Abg Gab? I think it's been almost a year. The "quick wins" are still stuck somewhere trying to find their way out to be implemented. Meanwhile, another year of oversupply of unemployable graduates. Sigh....

p/s I've started to train my sons to do some odd jobs around the house to earn extra pocket money if they want so much to buy that HotWheels they drool for.

The education portal will surely need a lot of expertise and with you working on it, I'm confident it'll bring so much benefits to the nation, InsyaAllah .

Good Luck !!

It'd be nice if you are not so shy....nak tengok jugak wajah Zack the Governor :)

This sounds like you are responding to some RFIs/RFPs. Well, me being one of the panels in evaluating and recommending which proposals to kill and which one to push through the final decision maker, I can relate myself to the Putrajaya folks…hehehe.

Anyway, you said it sir, life can be not so precarious as we thot, it’s all in our mind!

the moral of this story is, if u have a strong connection with certain datuks or tan sris, u can definitely get a deal no matter how bad your product/service is...err betol ke?

IBU --> Dato Mustapha Mohamad chaired the dialogue, yes.

Talking about Academia-Industry thing, I have personal view over this. Academia cannot cope with rapid change in needs of the industry. What is being taught today may not be relevant next year. More often than not, we in then industry want to have them well equipped for job and have not much space for apprentice.

Why they are having hard time to find jobs while the demands from the industry are on the rise? As a matter of fact opportunities come in abundance. Compatibility in knoledge they acquired in university and the practical usage of it in working life is not there.

Anyway, it's along way to go for us...

KAK ELLE --> Cyberjaya is not ulu Kak Elle. Be it the location of it (only 20 mins drive form KL), the look of it and even they have the best infrastructures in the country. The place is very nice, conducive for working and learning. There are universities there like Multimedia Univ and Limkokwing Univ.

May be I am talking in the context of jungle out there for Putrajaya/Cyberjaya is due to placing ourselves in the world standard.

What bad is only me... Sigh!

I am not in that bracket Kak Elle. I am comfortable talking to a fishmonger at the surau discussing about worries on too much entertainments for kids these days than with the high society discussing about a weekend hideaway in Paris.

MANAL --> Indeed I was the one snapped the pic.And thanks for your vote of confidence in me. You make me blush.

JHAZKITARO --> Welcome to my blog JHAZ. Thank you for coming.

SALAM PERKENALAN.

RINA --> We do not make a fool when it comes to education. It is a noble thing. I may am be the one who provide the phylosophy and objectives or may be the mission statement but the actual work to have it materialized, I engaged and outsource professionals in all areas.
Psst... with or without me, they can always make it happened but rather fortunate for mr, I can play my small part in it. Very little.

And I am a shy person, yes, but I am not that shy to be in the pic. In this case when with Idham, the time passed without the importance of us taking pics. hehe

NJ --> We have a lot of smart people in management and technical parts of it over in Putrajaya. I personally never worried on technical side because technical is always technical. If we don't have it, we can always outsource. If we need specific professional knowledge we can tap it from the market. After all technology is is boundariless nowadays. I never consider them as obstacles in Putrajaya.

But, when fortress is referred to is more on the decision maker. Decision makers can be divided into two: top officers and the ones elected by people. And you know which one is tougher. Well, know-how and know-who is very obvious ain't it? If you know what I mean.

KC --> I do not wanna agree with your statement but when I am that denial on the truth it cuts deep in me, bleeding inside. *Smile*

Sometimes we need to let others show us a refreshing perspective.

our education system leaves much to be desired... sure, the system will 'discover' those clever hard-working students... then cattle them off so that these 'brains' will be used to futher enrich those connected.

and if ur not a yes-man, u can forget about climbing the corporate ladder.

that's how i see it.

ANGGERIK MERAH --> That's right my dear, sky's the limit and how lucky I am seeing one of them like Mr Idham to show me even more.

Well, writing disrorder? You'll get back after a while. Take a good rest, go for massage or something. You must be very stressful.

KOPI O --> I do not know whether I do understand the way you understand or not or may be I don't quite understand in what context "professional selling" is, but as far as I am concerned, it does exist.

Vision and mission can be rhetoric sometimes but we are trying our best to be as practical as it can be. *Smile*

IDHAM --> Smiling is the only thing I can give because I possess no material worths to be shared with. And perhaps I have to thank you for having a hunch on what heart I am having. Very nice to hear that makes me feeling like prooving it more.

Indeed I'd love to meet you again. Next time around I try to be better me... Smile Sir. Thank you!

SYA --> In the first place IDHAM deserves all the respect for appreciating me as a person. And I am glad I could play a role showing, well not just showing but telling right on his face how much I admired him. Go ask him, I really did.

YT --> Educational portal is yet to be in the world standard in Malaysia. We are a bit behind due to many things such as infrastructures, contents but the biggest of all is what's the direction from the top.

Yeah, mix with religious people, to the very least we are shy to play truant from prayers whilst mix around with successful people, it motivates us towards positive things in life.

Mix wit GAB? wahahahah What can I offer my dear? I myself cannot even see good things in me for me to look up on myself... I need good people to be with me. I am a good student.

NANI --> *Smile* Love to have you here NANI.

INTAN --> Personally we are not that bad in our education system. Look, we are the products of the system. Had not the system been set up right some 20, 30 years ago, perhaps we are trailed behind so far from other countries.

And on the point of using each other either brain or brawn, the polar has been there for ages and it'll never come to end.

You hit the bull's eye over there. Right... I have no cut to be one in the corporate world. Someone help me.....
