Weird Things About Me

On Saturday, Feb 17, traffic in PLUS was pretty bad and I was caught in it. People were in their Chinese New Year balik-kampung-exodus while I was just on my way home for lunch. I chose to cut through Sg Buluh toll instead of the exit to GUTHRIE Highway miles ahead, but it still took me almost 2 hours to get there from Jalan Duta toll. Sigh! Ordinary traveling time would only take less than 10 minutes. It was a little remorse in me for not taking MRR2 instead.

But then, I realized those vegetations and majestic rocks along the highway were fascinating – so beautiful. I never take closer look at those all these while because I would be running at speed when using highway, as everyone would. When in a situation of bumper-to-bumper for hours, consciously, I started to enjoy the beautiful views that I missed all these years. After all why would I grudge over the traffic condition when I was not in position to change? At the same time it reminds me of possibly I would’ve had missed several beautiful things in life as well due to the fast pace of life we are living in. Thanks to the stand-still traffic for the inspiring moment.

And I had an idea. I started sending text message to friends. Azhar, my old friend from school just know how to tickle me with his reply that makes me look stupid laughing in the driver’s seat by myself. Well of course, it’s not too strange for people now but if you were to be seen laughing by yourself in a car some 20 years back, they might have thought you were out of your mind or something.

I also sent Idham in Jeddah a text message and he was kind enough to reply, even called my mobile (after I reached home). He told me he was on his way home for lunch. Kids were in school and he gave me the idea of “dessert” was in his lunch package.

When I browsed his blog today, it didn’t surprise me with the entry
Lunch….” But it surprised me with his previous entry. – Idham tagged me to write on weird things about me.

Oh boy, I know I may find it hard to write them down because the subject is not dearly to me but rest assured I am a good sport.

And it is proven hard when I keep thumping the backspace on the keyboard, even to the point deleting the whole thing before I got some momentum to go on.

What 6 weird things about me?

1. My working desk in office, nothing on it. No pictures of wife & kids, no clickety-clack of steel balls pendulum, no replica of a horse, no pen holders, nothing. I keep it clean all the time. It helps me more focus on my work. The only thing would mess my desk is when I am working on something. If it only requires 3” x 3” memo pad to write on, only that small piece of paper is granted a permit to be on it.

2. I’d fold and staple nicely the rough papers before throwing them into dust bin. I never crumbled them up. Any small pieces of paper or anything, I’d put them into used envelope, have it stapled before discard. Never a liquid of any form will be in the dust bin. Yanti, the cleaner gave a comment, “Sampah dalam bilik Boss sentiasa rapi, nggak perlu tukar plastiknya!”. Very true! That damn plastic bag has been there since the Japanese left Malaya.

3. I consider myself a helpful person but I’d be the last person to offer help when I know many others rushing to help. Pity the voluptuous lady in her low cut wearing tight skirt having flat tyre in the parking lot.

4. I do enjoy blending in the crowd after having my car parked somewhere. I’d be in my jeans and T-Shirt at the bus stand, standing there, putting up the same expression like other commuters before settling somewhere for my drinks. I was once chauffeured driven together with a bodyguard armed with a revolver when I was on my duty in Jakarta in late 90’s. I asked the driver to drop me in the city and I walked back to hotel by myself after hours pretending to be a local.

5. I was a risk-taker and recognized no threat to my life when I was young. When I was behind the wheel, I’d push the machine to the limit. I won’t stop until I heard tyres screeching and the smell of burnt rubber was so satisfying. Winding road was heaven to me. It was hell of a fun when the adrenaline pumped up with fast pounding of heartbeats and sweating. Now no more! (Anda mampu mengubahnya!)

6. I was a professional speaker / trainer that used to train hundreds of speakers in all aspects of public speaking throughout the Asia Pacific basin. I was complimented by people as an eloquent speaker on the stage but I would be dumbfounded when I have to face a camera. I was once offered for an audition with the local TV station for English section news but the thought of spotlights beaming on me and the big camera in front to swallow me whole, was enough for me to retreat. And it was not my cup of tea anyway.

Yeah...

Well… I have done my part!

I am now quoting what Idham said, “I will carry on the tradition and tag the following unfortunate friends (sorry folks, I have run out of enemies)”: hehehe
Those are....

1. NJ (Love to see the other side of you)
2. Kak Elle (This Singaporean lady is known to be a good sport too)
3. Rina Jordan (Because you're cool)
4. KC (I know Idham has tagged you but I’d love to have you fall in the first 6 in my request)
5. JoKontan (It’s all because of my love to you my man)
6. Mommy Alif (Well, you're not trapped but invited)

I’d love to tag Kopi O but he holds no blog though, hehehe

RULES: People who are tagged should write a blog post of 6 weird things about them as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says 'you are tagged' in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

Hi Gab,

Did you know I was tagged for this weirdness thingy and I kindly let both you and Simah (I mentioned that in 'weird' entry) off cos I remembered you both were tagged for something before. I tagged Idham and now he tagged you..ha ha.

I like 1&2. Am always dreaming to embrace that. Failed badly so far..sigh! I agree a clean desk, or clean anything keeps the mind clear!

No 6 is amazing! Gosh you did all that. Wonderful. Hey if I knew you for real, maybe I'd invite you to do something for my alma mater. Nak tak? *smile*

hi gab,

Kalau you tak weird like in no6, rasanya I tak kena tagged sebab siapalah I berbanding the famous ,macho TV personality...:P

ManaL said...

I would prefer to stick to "one of a kind".

I still tak paham why u need to staple those papers u wanna dispose. Ahh...one of your "thingies" eh....but that is like wasting the stapler's bullets.

How about superstition, do u have/believe in any?

never know individual with no 2 even exist! hahahah that's really weird gab..

i got tagged? will think hard to come up with 1 let alone 6! :)

ANGGERIK MERAH --> Thanks for reading. Am I that weird? hehe

SIMAH --> I had you on my mind to tag as well but since I tagged you last time, I give you a break. Sooner or later you will be tagged though.

KAK ELLE --> Those are not weirds Kak Elle, I read it already. heheh Anyway credit goes to you for the spirit.

RUBY --> When you are dreaming to embrace the thingy Nos 1 & 2, you make me feel not alone anymore. At least it's not that weird after all. And yes, clean place to work with less or no distraction will definitely increase quality hours of working.
And who me? To invite over for training? I hang the boots years ago. *Smile balik*

KC --> No, I am not to the standard. There are many classes of professionals and I happened to make up the numbers.
Oficially OCD? Oh come on... LOL!
I read wha you wrote o your weirdo things and sniffing hands when waking up? O boy... First time I heard this. You are a good sport KC.

KAK LADY --> In the name of what is demanded from the topic, there you go some weird things about me... LOL!

RINA JORDAN --> I was not handsome enough to be on TV Rina. Wahahahah Am I that weird?
Looking forward to reading what you have to write on your thingy.

MANAL --> I have no explanation over that No 2 thing. Why it happens? The closest I can get is what KC is putting up there, OCD. And I do not feel that strange after all knowing another person like RUBY who wished to have it done for her.
Superstition? I do not carry any I supposed. Cleanliness and tidiness on mind play major part.

MOMMY ALIF --> It does exist Mommy Alif. I am the one. hahahahaha What can I say, but it explains above.

I can relate to #3. I think it's really a case of slow reaction on my part. By the time i've decided to help, it's over. Nowadays, i'm trying my best to overcome that shortcoming.

dear gab..
me again..
u ni sebenarnya buat apa as a career? it is obvious u r a boss somewhere..but what kind of job do u do now..esp bila u cakap u dah hang ur boots on public speaking..

am getting curiouser about this weird gab :0)

Salam Bro Gab,

I am kinda like you on #1, nothing on my table except my laptop and one or two post-it notes. But #2, again, why do you need to staple the papers before discarding them. Boy, u are weird!

But the biggest weirdness is #6, I have to agree with LoveUJordan, I am being tagged by one macho smooth talker famous personality. Today is indeed my lucky day!

i am amaze at no 3. boleh percaya ke ni? *raised eyebrows*

i have been to public speaking courses. wonder if you were the facilitator

INTAN --> I can be very fast offering help when I was the first to be a potential helper. But when I know many others are eyeing to give helping hands, I'd feel like my help is less needed.

SIMAH --> Lemme tell ya... I was drifted into training line those days, albeit, my nature is always in technical line. People said I have talents in speeches, training and what not. So did, I jumped into it. As years went by, I managed more than execute and climbed up the ladder of management until the highest post possible as a non-share holder. Network of people getting bigger and better.
I switched to more adventurous venture by bidding for MBO but God had another plan for me. I fumbled and fall. I was kicked out, jobless.
When I was jobless, that was years ago, I had no money, no car, no career, no house, no nothing; just the love from wife and kids. I didn't know where to go. I was in a bad shape but never in a low sipirit. Refer to my previous entry, http://gabenor.blogspot.com/2006/11/of-days-i-remembered.html on point No. 6.
Since I know a few tycoons, I came up with a proposal to set up a business in IT. After quite lengthy of ding-dong, I striked. And here I am, now managing an IT company with MSC Status specializing in software development apart from e-Commerce, e-Governnace and WebDevelopment.

Oh by the way, my background is in Engineering.

Above all, I am far away from "something special"

Satisfied?

NJ --> I noticed point #2 has left many people curious about it. Perhaps it starts off with a habit that I do not fold papers/documents, afraid that it'd spoil the look, breaks the smooth nature of the paper. When it is not needed, becomes rough paper or anything, I restrain myself from crumbling the paper because it doesn't look tidy. Extension to that, if weird is the word, I staple it. hahaha
And to me it's not weird about #6. I was trained to be in a free-style speech and training, expressive in my own way, but when it comes under the spotlights and camera, somehow it is a polished way of doing it, more to "acting" if you wish. So then, to act out with a polished script is not dearly to my inner self.

LOLLIES --> You raised your eyebrows! I'd say, when my help is less needed since many others are rushing for it, I'd shy away. Figuratively, when the voluptious is in dire need for help, many gentlemen will be all willing to help. hehe But of course, if I was there as the first person as the candidate to help, I would help. Regardless of voluptous or not. If it is, perhaps it's just a bonus. *Wink*

Gab,
Now I feel `weird'..I'm the only person here with No Blog..hehehhe.
Your #6 reminds me of my angan-angan. Just to share the story. A long time ago, I went for the `News Presenter Audition'. It was perfect... Unfortunately, I didn't get..maybe becoz of the screen size. I think, it has been configured to cater for the smaller version of presenter only.:) To be honest, I'm not good in writting & also public speaking. I went for that audition just to break the ice... hehehhehe.
Tonite, I've to give a welcome note for the company casual dinner. And I'm still nervous.

Gab,
Just to add.
For #2. ` Sampah dalam bilik Boss sentiasa rapi, nggak perlu tukar plastiknya!”

Tension lah staff camni kalau boss punya sampah lagi rapi dari meja staff..:)

i impress your no 2....and i should take that kind of weird to myself......dulu-dulu my father selalu suruh kita orang lepas makan nasik lemak..lipat kertas bungkus nasik lemak tu sehingga yang paling kecil, sapa paling kecil kira the bestlah...then ikat balik dengan getah dan buang dalam tong sampah.......adik saya cakap lipat-lipat kertas ni - 'wasting my timeee jer'..............

i respect your no 6....we need somebody/deejay for Radio Saujana Utama...no need to face the camera ..yay .......hahahaha

KOPI O --> I am very sure by the time you read this reply you have already enjoying your successful company dinner.
And hey, I have a strange feeling long before you told about your going thru audition thing, that, you do have "something" I need to know. Hmmm.

About "sampah" I am not particular to staff. But when it comes to clean table to be without necessary things that related to what they are doing, I am very particular.

KAK ELLE --> Yeah, you can say that Kak Elle. That's why I was interested to know about Adam last time, since you mentioned a bit on IT thing.

TUN --> I read somewhere, we need to have something "one of a kind", beyond the ordinary, to outshine others but not necessarily weird though. hehehehe

SIMAH --> Am I revealing too much of myself over the blog? But I am glad you got the better idea.

IDHAM --> Sometimes I don't know, bakat terpendam ke bakat terendam. Terpendam boleg dicungkil, terendam, chances are kalau besi berkarat, kalau ubi stella "kelarah" weheheh Remember that term used for ubi stella?

Ermm... you want her phone no? hahahaha

BERLINGO --> If you have the interest to take up the weird trait of mine, I can have a clear idea about your character because it's dearly to me. As far as I know you in Saujana Utama, I have seen some similarities between you and me except you are way, way better than me and I used to openly compliment you before.

Radio Saujana Utama? whahahah canggih...canggih...

It was just a small gathering; principal & end-users. Yes, Gab. I'm in the IT industry too, involve in a Multi-Tasking but non-technical.
